NIMET introduces innovative IOT weather to strengthen urban climate monitoring across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has introduced innovative IoT-powered weather stations to enhance urban climate monitoring across Nigeria. These stations are designed to improve data accuracy and reliability, particularly in urban areas, and are part of a collaborative effort between NiMet, Barani Design Technologies, and the West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL).

Key Features of the IoT Weather Stations:
- IoT-Powered: Utilizes Internet of Things technology for efficient data transmission
- LoRaWAN-Enabled: Allows for long-range wireless communication
- Energy-Efficient: Designed to reduce power consumption through advanced wireless technologies
- Compliance with WMO Standards: Ensures data accuracy and comparability globally
Objectives:
- Improve Weather Forecasting: Enhance accuracy and timeliness of weather information
- Climate Adaptation: Support data-driven urban planning and climate adaptation initiatives
- Disaster Risk Reduction: Strengthen Nigeria’s resilience to climate-related disasters
Partnership Details:
- Donation: Barani Design Technologies and WASCAL donated the innovative weather stations
- Capacity Building: NiMet’s technical teams will receive training to ensure sustainability and seamless data transmission
- Existing Infrastructure: The new stations complement the existing 25 Barani Automatic Weather Stations already operational within NiMet’s network
